Relations: In Development (C) 2009-2011

2012 is upon us and it is no surprise that the Indigenous world would embrace the opportunity to offer its continued interest through the lens of their contemporary artists. The Hopi, Mohawk, Mayan, and Tibetan are some of the Peoples that have expressed predictions surrounding the positioning of the December 21, 2012 cosmologies. Many scientists acknowledge the Mayan calendar for it precise accuracy.

Science also confirms that the activity on the Sun affects the molten core of our Earth. The Earths molten center pulsates and the rhythm of this beat also affects us as humans; our brain waves mirror this measure. This influences us on many levels, including the way we perceive time. Humans have a deeper physical relationship with the elements then most consciously understand. I am in the process of making a MAX/MSP/Jitter piece that responds to our relationship to the Sun, the Moon, the Earth and the Self.

Round/Sound North End Arts Centre

Round/Sound is a youth exhibition investigating that various representations of the circle symbolized in culture, music and identity. From September - December 2010, youth at the North End Arts Centre in Winnipeg were engaged in creative play with international artist Jason Baerg through a series of painting workshops. Vinyl records, drum skins and hand drums which are instruments all capable of lyrical soundscapes - have been abstracted to describe their sensibility, energy and spirit in a visual manner. Thinking in the round and inspired by sound, youth composed visual rhythmic abstractions that challenge their functionality and aesthetic presence through an interactive installation celebrating their imaginative spirit.

Relations is a developing body of work that responds to the relationships we have with each other, the Earth, Sun and beyond and back again to the self. This first iteration focuses on the relationships we have with each other. It has been an honour to be hosted by Ndinawe and Urban Shaman Inc. for the residency that has brought me here to Winnipeg from Toronto in September. It has allowed me to focus on the foundations of my practice in drawing and painting and share this with the Youth and communities at the North End Arts Centre and Art City. ~

Jason Baerg's Urban Footprint Series is the aestheticization of a continuing dialogue that interrogates the global population explosion. In this series you find abstractions of skyscrapers from around the world: the Metropolitan skyscraper in Tokyo, the Hearst Tower in New York City, the Gherkin building in London, UK, as well as the De Beers Building in Johannesburg, South Africa. Added in the mix are abstractions of a North American 16 pole Plains Cree Tipi, which invites the audience to question their relationship to time, space, and worldview. Formally the digital prints are intervened with white paint, framed in white and mounted on white walls; thus challenging where composition or architecture begin and end. Conceptually the work lends to the exchange of ideas in our future best directions considering sustainability in mass residential scenarios, diversity, population density and natural resources.

Works from this series have been presented at The Spoke Club in Toronto in 2011, The Fountain Art Fair during Art Basel Miami 2010 and The Fountain Art Fair NYC 2011.

Authors and Antidotes

Jason Baergs process incorporates digital media in his production effecting both the image and content of his work. Digital imagery as a legitimate subject matter for painting has not been explored thoroughly within contemporary painting. His approach to incorporating digital interactive practice into painting results in a multi-layered mediated expression. In the two painting installations, the main image motifs are derived from ASCII text combinations and symbol-based fonts. This is a somewhat nostalgic reference to the history of early computer based graphic systems. These symbols were the means to generate visual imagery on what were primitive and graphically limited computer systems. All four works in the exhibition are interrelated and engage in a referential system that is correlated to one another. While one does not need to read the works in series, it is clear that each work is dependent on the viewers knowledge of the other works. While this could be said of other artists and their work as it relates to a series or body of work, Baergs work differs in that it is a process of revealing and layering imagery between the different works that creates meaning in the individual works.

Jason Baerg used Max/MSP/Jitter to produce Primary Manifestos, a unique platform that relies on six different rhythms and four interfaces with 360 still images that are fed through the software and projected resulting programmed content in a constant state of controlled change. The consequence challenges looped digital media as the software generates content in steady flux, offering a unique experience for the audience every time they are in the gallery space. The new media component supported three 8'x8' acrylic paintings: Primary Manifestos in Red, Yellow and Blue.

Where are we standing today?

Globalism forces us to reflect on the collective contributions of our principle artistic systems that have set the stage for contemporary mass expression. Principle Artistic Systems refer to defining lines of custom; the First People and their contouring terms granted to us from the original cultures from our North, South, East and Western civilizations. Primary Manifestos reflects on the influential contributions of these foundational (Red, White, Black and Yellow) cultures and the current international collision that is occurring organically in our multicultural environments and media injected atmospheres. Baergs Primary Manifestos grew out of a lexicon of 360 digital drawings, paying homage to The Americas (Red), Asia (Yellow), Africa (Black), and Europe (White). From these locations, abstractions were created referencing lakes, cities, plants and animals.

Red, Yellow, Black and White

The Plain Truth; RYBW, is a series of oil paintings and light boxes that reflect past, present and future iterations of our positioning in physical, physiological and virtual space. The compositions were created as part of an online commission for Urban Shaman's on-line initiative, stormspirits.ca for the Virtual Museum of Canada .

RYBW: The Plain Truth Project, is inspired from an air plain window, granting an aerial view of the Great Plains of North America. Its message is initiated to encourage a perspective of engagement, reflection and empowered visioning. The gallery image compositions include the four colours of Red, Yellow, Black and White and are realized as an installation for a solo exhibition in Montréal in November, 2007 at Galerie Sandra Goldie and Urban Shaman Gallery in the Marvin Francis Memorial Media Gallery in the winter of 2008. Part of the work travelled back to the FOFA Gallery for a group show at the University of Concordia. The complete installation then returned to Toronto for a solo at the Paul Petro Special Projects space to open the Fall 2008 season. The work traveled on to Centre A (UBC) in the summer of 2009. Primary Manifestos are new works from this series and both series were included in presentations at AXENEO7 (Ottawa/Hull). In the summer of 2010, part of the RYBW series was presented at International and Foreign Affairs Canada in Ottawa.

Biography

As a Visual Artist, Baerg has presented at such international art events as the Luminato Festival, the Toronto International Art Fair, and Art Basel Miami. Jason Baerg has given formal artist talks at such institutions as the University of British Columbia Okanagan, New York City’s Parsons School of Design and the University of Toronto. He has sat on numerous art juries and won awards through such facilitators as the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and The Toronto Arts Council. Dedicated to community development, Jason Baerg continues to contribute to such national arts organizations as a board member for the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective, The National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition and the Independent Media Arts Alliance.
